HISTORY The history of aqeous washing wool in Australia goes back to the days of MacArthur when it was common practice to run sheep through a convenient stream or any other available water in an effort to remove as much dirt as possible before shearing. The purpose of this was to make the wool look cleaner and brighter in order to obtain a better sale price. In time and as numbers of sheep multiplied, machinery was introduced. At first machinery was used on the land utilizing natural streams. Eventually, sophisticated machinery was developed and installed in the major wool selling centre which became the forerunner of the wool scours we know today. The intention of wool washing is to prepare the wool for the carding or combing machines. Wool washing is a labour intensive process and in early days, low cost machinery was installed in countries with low labour costs. This is losing favour in present times due to ecology costs. An Added advantage in installing machinery in the country of the wool origin is a saving in shipping freight costs. In Western Australia, an average of 33% of the greasy wool shorn is comprised of grease, dirt and vegetable matter, hence by washing the wool first, the exporter only ships the clean weight, an average of 67% of the original greasy weight. |
